Meet the Founders: Maria and Werner Forster of Revival Einkorn

Maria and Werner Forster of Revival Einkorn

Maria and Werner are on a mission to bring back the wheat that our ancestors ate. Determined to do away with processed foods, they spent more than a decade learning the ins and outs of einkorn—the most untouched and natural wheat in existence. Now, Revival Einkorn is exclusively grown on family-owned farms in Spain, resulting in a variety of nutritious pastas and crackers that you can enjoy at home.

In addition to being rich in protein and antioxidants, einkorn is a revolution for regenerative farming due to its deep roots and natural resilience. Requiring zero chemical fertilizers or pesticides, this grain also uses minimal water, making it a planet- and people-friendly alternative to modern wheat.

Recently, we caught up with Maria and Werner to learn more about their journey and hear their advice for fellow entrepreneurs.

1. Why did you start Revival Einkorn?

As we deepened our understanding of einkorn, the Earth’s first wheat, we were overwhelmed and compelled to make it available to the world. Einkorn is the only non-hybridized wheat, meaning it’s the wheat we can all eat. It represents a great discovery for this time, as the world needs to return to healthier methods practiced by our ancestors, now more than ever.

On a personal level, we wanted our children to be raised on this beautiful grain, and it’s been the only flour we've had at home for the past 15 years. Having observed the negative health trends associated with processed foods, we were inspired to bring back einkorn, known for its unparalleled flavor and nutritional benefits. Our goal is to share the amazing nutritional benefits and rich history of einkorn, encouraging a healthier and more natural way of eating.

2. What obstacles did you face along the way?

One of our significant challenges was the initial sourcing and cultivation of einkorn. Since it had largely fallen out of modern agricultural practices, we had to continue self-funding the discovery of the right variety that was genetically pure while learning the farming techniques, which took years. This was daunting, especially as we weren't sure what product we would ultimately sell or to which market.

However, the compelling nature of einkorn kept us going. We collaborated with dedicated farmers and invested in regenerative farming techniques to ensure its sustainability. Additionally, educating the market about the benefits of einkorn compared to modern wheat varieties required substantial effort and patience.

3. What lessons do you have for other entrepreneurs?

Persistence and passion are crucial. It's important to stay true to your mission and values, especially when faced with obstacles. Another key lesson is the importance of building a strong, collaborative team. Surround yourself with people who share your vision and can bring diverse skills to the table. Lastly, always keep learning and be open to adapting your strategies as you grow.

4. What’s on the horizon for Revival Einkorn?

We are excited to expand our product line and reach more consumers. In addition to our current offerings, we plan to introduce new einkorn-based products that cater to different dietary preferences and culinary uses. We are also working on increasing our educational initiatives to raise awareness about the benefits of einkorn and sustainable farming practices. Ultimately, our goal is to continue promoting healthy eating habits and environmental stewardship.

5. How do you keep work/life balance? What drives/inspires you?

Maintaining a work/life balance is essential for our well-being and productivity. We make time for family, hobbies, and relaxation to recharge and stay motivated. Our inspiration comes from seeing the positive impact our products have on people's health and the environment. Knowing that we are contributing to a healthier future for our children and the planet keeps us driven and passionate about our work.
